So....Who are we? We are a family – dad, mom, and five children who were blessed to be loved by Mary and Elizabeth as mom and grandmom... In their ways, they taught us generosity, humility and much more. In turn, we taught our children alongside them, those same qualities and more. All of us love the “hugs” of love that handcrafted afghans provide. Five of the seven of us can either share that crafted hug or are learning the techniques which will form scrapghans of our own design... As this project grows and spreads it's wings of love – each of us will have a part in making it happen. From overseeing all aspects; cataloguing squares; finishing scrapghans; organizing recipients; delivery and more – we will get it done with the help and magic of scrap-fairies world-wide. It is our mission. It is our way of honoring and spreading sunshine and love. Then – Who – or What is MEI???? In this instance, MEI is neither a “who” or a “what”...well, not exactly... MEI is an acronym for the two very special and gracious ladies who's memories are honored by this project. Between December 2003 and December 2004 – our family lost two very beautiful and special ladies. Each a mother and a mother-in-law – both Grandmom. Mom C was the needlecrafter – knitting or crocheting for years. You could find her in her chair early in the morning or late at night with fingers flying. There was always a project or two going – for the church to raffle off or for someone as a gift. Mom A loved the fruits of those flying fingers for many years. For the last couple of years of her life though, she was a resident at a nursing home. One of the few things that she had from her previous life – were afghans to hug her in love and warmth. In December 2004, on a visit to the home, they had a “Giving Tree” set up in the lobby – a place where residents' wishes were made public for some special “Santa” to fill. As I started through the wishes, I was surprised and shocked at how many residents asked for an afghan. A simple afghan. The time was short and I knew not enough for me to take care of these requests. But still, the requests haunted me in their own way. After Mom A's death, as I sat thinking one day – an idea started to form. Day after day it grew until I knew I had to act on it. And I did. That's when MEI Scrapghans Hug was born! Mom C's first name was Mary (she had no middle name). Mom A's first and middle names were Elizabeth Irma. We took the initial from each name and came up with MEI. MEI is a name found in several cultures. In Latin – it means Great One... In Hawaiian and Dutch it means simply – May... In Chinese it means – Beautiful Plum Any way you look at it MEI is beautiful and great...Just like the ladies whose memories have given birth to this project.
