Frequently Asked Questions

Why did you start this project?

Very simply – the project was begun in response to a need. Nursing home residents asked simply for afghans from Santa for Christmas. It was difficult for us to fathom that an afghan would be a wish – and so we felt that this was one wish that could be answered any time of the year – not just at Christmas.

What is MEI Scrapghans Hug?

MEI Scrapghans Hug is a project begun to help unite needlecrafters with left-over yarn and organizations/people who can use and appreciate afghans. Based on the “Clam Principle ” - the project is founded on the belief that “every little bit counts”.

Why “scrapghans”?

The word “scrapghans” comes from the combination of the words “scrap” and “afghans”. Basically it means afghans made from scraps (of yarn). It is our hope that needlecrafters from around the world will join us with their scrap squares to create afghans forthose that will bask in their hugs.

Why do you refer to volunteers as “scrapfairies”?

First of all - scrap - because everyone is working with scrap yarn. Secondly – fairies are mythical creatures that have a tendency to surprise others with their spirit and fun. So – doesn't it stand to reason that as we work with scrap yarn and surprise others with our handwork – we shouldcome to be known as “scrap-fairies”?

What size squares?

Basically any size that you care to make. It would probably be best if they were more than two rows around – but then again, that would be your choice. We will join smaller squares together to fit with larger ones and so on – so don't let size be a consideration.

What shape “squares”?

Squares by their nature tend to be four-sided. However, we aren't picky at all. If your favorite “square” is something other than four-sided – don't worry – we can use it! Three-sided, five-sided, six-sided or more – we'll happily take what you offer. And oh yes – we even take four-sided squares.

What weight yarn?

Any weight yarn you have is fine. All we ask that if it is something besides worsted weight, just add a brief note that tells us the weight – ie – fingering, sport, bulky, etc.

What kind of yarn?

Again, any kind of yarn that you are working with is fine. All we ask is that if it is something other than acrylic, add a brief note that tells us so we can combine like yarns into scrapghans. Such as wool, mohair, cotton, etc.

How many must I make?

You are not required to make any particular number of “squares”. It is completely up to you whether you send one or more. You could send one with every project or every thrid project. It is completely up to you – whatever you feel moved to do.

How many should I send?

Again, there is no requirement or hard and fast rule. If you have one square to send – send it on. If you have a lot of scrap and have squares done – send many. It's totally up to you!

How much postage do I need?

Generally, one square that is 4 inches by 4 inches and made of worsted weight acrylic yarn, should be able to be mailed using one standard US postage stamp. More squares or different sizes or types of yarn may require more postage. Please check with your local post office to be sure. If you are in another country, please check with your local postal standards first.
